The BYC has a fantastic sailing school with a long history, which is organized by members and offered to the public. The school teaches youth and adult sailors alike to sail dinghies ranging from CanSail 1 to CanSail 6. You do not need to be a member to learn to sail at the Barrie Yacht Club. Our instruction fleet includes six Vibe Topaz dinghies outfitted with spinnakers, as well as O'Pen BIC's, 420's, Laser and Laser II sailboats. We also feature a racing program for youth, which includes our fleet of Lasers, 420s and exciting 29’er.
Youth Cansail 1 & 2
CANSail 1 and 2 introduce fundamental sailing skills. As the first step in learning to sail a small boat, you’ll learn about the different parts of the boat, and learn some basics sailing skills - like tiller steering and proper body position. Level 1 and 2 typically require at least two weeks of sailing per level to allow sailors time to learn and demonstrate the skills required. Theses classes are geared towards sailors ages 8 thru 19+
Youth Cansail 3 & 4
Ages 11 - 19+
Cansail 3 & 4 build upon the fundamental sailing skills learned in Cansail 2 while introducing more advanced sailing techniques. The courses emphasize boat speed, maneuver efficiency and technical accuracy. Sailors generally require at least 4 weeks of training to demonstrate and complete the skill set. Sailors in level 4 are required to compete in a regatta to complete the level. Our courses are offered in 2 week blocks to allow for all the material to be covered.
